Regiments 51 - 100

56th Infantry

1985.082 State Color Evans and Hassall v1p155
56th Infantry, First State Color. The 56th regiment was organized during the fall of 1861, and was composed of men from Susquehanna, Wayne, Indiana, Luzerne, Northumberland, Philadelphia, Lycoming, Centre, Snyder, Union, and Schuylkill counties. The regiment received its state color on March 8, 1862, immediately before departing Harrisburg. Sergeant Archibald C. Bruce was the first color-sergeant, appointed by Colonel Sullivan A. Meredith on March 7. However, Bruce was the regiment's first casualty when he died of disease on March 20th. Colonel Meredith was replaced by Lieutenant-Colonel J. William Hoffmann during the battle of Brawner Farm when the Colonel was wounded. The flag was captured at the battle of Second Manassas, August 29, 1862. It was reported to Hofmann that the flag was torn into small pieces, however, the flag was found in 1887 in Illinois in the possession of Samuel Walters, an ex-mounted infantryman who acquired the flag when he found it in North Carolina. The 56th was mustered out of service on July 1, 1865.

1985.083 Regimental Color Unknown v1p158
56th Infantry, Regimental Color. The 56th regiment was organized during the fall of 1861, and was composed of men from Susquehanna, Wayne, Indiana, Luzerne, Northumberland, Philadelphia, Lycoming, Centre, Snyder, Union, and Schuylkill counties. It is suggested the regiment received this regimental color in mid-1865, carried by one of two new color-sergeants, John Y. Earhart or 16 year old Sergeant Hugh Logue. The 56th regiment was mustered out of service on July 1, 1865.

1985.084 State Color Evans and Hassall v1p157
56th Infantry, Second State Color. The 56th regiment was organized during the fall of 1861, and was composed of men from Susquehanna, Wayne, Indiana, Luzerne, Northumberland, Philadelphia, Lycoming, Centre, Snyder, Union, and Schuylkill counties. Sometime after the regiment re-enlisted during the winter of 1863-1864 they received their second state color. The regiment was mustered out of service on July 1, 1865.
